Message I've been kicking this idea around for a while mainly because I'm a bit confused on which one is better. I've looked all over the internet, different forums where this topic has been discussed and they all have been totally inconclusive. There has to be an explanation that resolves this issue.

Some things that I have considered:

13B rotary engine. Exceptionally low torque, very high HP (because of higher RPM).

It seems that there has got to be a formula that takes the torque and horsepower and shows a relationship that determines what hp/tq combination is capable of doing the most work (i.e. getting your car down the track).

Going back to the whole rotary engine thing, it has been seeming more and more to me that both factors (HP and torque) are the key as they show the relationship between instantaneous force (TQ) and the work (horsepower/rotation). the Supra guys harp on torque while their cars do make more of it, they also have a longer stroke that contributes to it. But I have seen rotary powered cars making 500HP at 200ft/lbs of torque and running 9s down the strip in a little datsun. Take a 2JZ making that same torque and put it against this 200ft/lbs rotary and well, we all know who will win.

Any ideas?
